milan, italy, 1983. in the midst of the 80s economic boom, which gave an injection of optimism after the heavily political 70s, a group of young local musicians meet every night in a basement to rehearse and record a peculiar breed of italian disco music. originated from the ashes of various other projects, and rooted in the broader jazz-funk tradition, the group creates music which is equally inspired by contemporary fusion as well as by the first wave of the italo-disco sound. over approximately 3 years the band has recorded and played live, until the dismantling of the project towards the mid 80 s. fast forward 35 years and the genuinely mediterranean flavor of qvark s demo recordings are still enjoyable, both for the actual resurgence of the italian disco tradition and for the groovy quirkiness of a project which has been too long forgotten. after an intense work of audio restoration of such tapes, heavily affected by time, early sounds is pleased to present a compilation which is an important find to define the sound of late 70 s and early 80 s italian club sound.-

having established itself with eps from duke slammer and dmx krew, dublin’s modern magic welcomes bari’s armonics for the label’s third release. a trained pianist and resident dj/curator of the we talk event series in his home city, armonics draws influence from electronic music across the past 40 years: chicago & acid house, italo- & electro-disco, new wave, synth-pop and vaporwave.

this new release from best record italy contains for the first time the 3 tracks edited and mixed by john jellybean benitez between 1981 and 1982 of the italo disco songs by kasso (the pseudonym used by claudio simonetti) who became a classic in the underground house music scene of n.y. and chicago!

we have been waiting for pele to crop up on a release from the footy mad rothmans and what a time to play that hand card. teaming up once more with his aussie team mate dawn again and a first apperance from leeds legends clandestino. the first track from the ep cobblejam is nothing short of first class, a worthy italo, chuggy, powerhouse that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. the b-side finds us with the slightly strangely named woman for a day theres nothing strange about the track itself though. a deep and dark track that slowly drives forward into the abyss. finishing off the record is an excellent remix from the lads over at clandestino. their dessert trance vibe brings the record together as sweetly as pele brought together that 1970 world cup winning team.

yandom are not new to the scene. but then again they are. the project has been kicked off by yannick labbe and dominik marz, already renowned producers and djs before they decided to join forces in in january of 2017 with their remix for dekodeko on leipzig-based label ors. yandoms productions are discoid excursions to the dark side a sound spanning from leftfield italo-esque productions to straight up techno-bangers. a sound already loved and played by artists like michael mayer, solomun, kornel kovacs and many more. at the moment, yandom are working on eps following their next release on &nd music (scheduled for september 2017). as djs, yandom deliver an infectious and very musical freestyleapproach, dropping anything from techno to vintage classics and held together by a strong foundation of electronica. a yandom-set is anything but random and yes, they do look as good in reality as on the photos.

lange hat uns der wiener elektronikmusiker klaus waldeck – zuletzt bekannt durch sein legendäres album »ballroom stories« (2007) – warten lassen. die vorfreude ist groß und waldeck hat auch gleich eine Überraschung für uns parat: sämtliche titel wurden auf italienisch eingesungen - und zwar von der fantastischen neuentdeckung, der wiener sängerin heidi moussa-benammar (»la heidi«).
waldeck selbst möchte gran paradiso als eine »spaghetti & western« produktion bezeichnet wissen: »gran paradiso, das ist einerseits hommage an den legendären sound des italo-westerns – andererseits spürt es auch den sentimentalen klängen des italienischen canzone nach - jedoch stets mit der nötigen ironischen distanz.« »italienisch... schon die sprache klingt nach musik«
der sound des albums trägt waldecks unverkennbare handschrift. gelegentliche einsprengsel von tango, dub und reggae runden dieses abwechslungsreiche sommeralbum ab.
alles in allem: ein entspanntes sommerliches album, das man auch gerne im herbst und winter hört, um sich daran zu erwärmen.
